A gwaebul is a large Buddhist painting hung in the courtyard in front of the main hall of a temple for major rites and ceremonies; the Hanging Painting of Cheoneunsa Temple depicts Sakyamuni Buddha alone. It measures 927.5 by 559.5 cm overall, showing Sakyamuni standing frontally and filling the huge picture surface. Painted in 1673, the fourteenth year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, by painters including Gyeongsim, Jigam and Neungseong, this solitary image—with its massive, block-like form, its distinctively deep earthy-red colouring, its brushwork and its patterning—is valued as important material demonstrating a new trend of the late seventeenth century.
