Hanging Painting of Dabosa Temple

This is a gwaebul, a huge Buddhist painting hung outdoors for large ceremonies, showing a standing Sakyamuni Buddha triad filling the picture, with bodhisattvas and buddhas painted smaller above. It was originally enshrined at Boheungsa Temple on Geumseongsan Mountain in Naju. The composition is centred on the standing Sakyamuni triad, with the bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara (Gwaneum) and Mahasthamaprapta (Daeseji) paired above on either side, together with the Buddhas Prabhutaratna (Dabo) and Amitabha (Amita) — a format that was popular at the time. This hanging painting was produced in the twenty-first year of King Yeongjo of Joseon (1745) by nine painter-monks, including Uigyeom, a leading Buddhist painter of the late Joseon period. The drapery patterns are lavish, but the precision of form, colouring and brushwork is somewhat diminished, making this an important work that reflects the style of Uigyeom's late-career paintings.
