Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stupa stands in the stupa hall at the entrance to Daeheungsa Temple. It is a stone stupa of the octagonal round-hall type, consisting of a base, a body, and a finial, with a total height of 2.7 m. The ground stone is octagonal, and on the lower base stone above it eight large inverted lotus petals are carved; the upper base stone bears eight upward-facing lotus petals in symmetry with those below, while the middle base stone is carved with animal figures. The front of the body bears the inscription "Cheongheodang", identifying the stupa as that of Master Seosan. The roof stone is carved to represent features seen in wooden architecture, such as tiled roof ridges and double eaves; it also shows the unusual feature of dragon heads at the ends of the hip ridges, in place of the usual corner-flower ornaments. The finial is realistically carved with dragons and forms a tall jewel shape, its surface densely decorated with carving. Since the nearby stele for Master Seosan was erected in 1647, the 25th year of King Injo of Joseon, this stupa is presumed to have been built around the same time. The Stupa of Buddhist Monk Seosan at Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam, is a stone stupa in the octagonal round-hall style; the varied decoration on each part gives it distinctive features not found on other stupas, and it is regarded as important material for the study of stupas.
