Dry-lacquered Seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of Naksansa Temple, Yangyang
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This dry-lacquer Buddhist statue is enshrined in Wontongbojeon Hall at Naksansa Temple, and is also said to have been brought from nearby Yeonghyeolsa Temple. It sits in the full lotus position on an octagonal metal pedestal, with a moderately proportioned, upright torso and the head tilted slightly forward, giving the impression that it is looking down. On its head is an extremely elaborate tall crown, and its face - almost square yet without sharp angles, round and full - has neatly rendered ears, eyes, mouth and nose. The neck clearly shows the three folds known as samdo, and the chest is rendered prominently. The right hand is raised to the chest and the left rests on the abdomen, with the thumb and middle finger touching; the hands are delicately, almost slenderly, rendered. The robe covering both shoulders falls in naturally flowing folds, and the collar of the undergarment crosses horizontally beneath the chest. Elaborate bead ornaments hang over the entire body. Judging by its stylistic technique, this image of Avalokitesvara appears to be an early Joseon work based on the traditional style of the late Goryeo period. Overall the proportions of each part are well balanced and the facial expression is especially fine; moreover, the crown retains its original form, following a style dating back to ancient times, making it a very important resource for the study of Buddhist crowns.
