Documents Written in the Tibetan Language at Songgwangsa Temple, Suncheon
순천 송광사 티베트문 법지 · 順天 松廣寺 티베트文 法旨

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a document written in the Tibetan script, held at Songgwangsa Temple. It is said to have been brought back by State Preceptor Wongam, the sixth of the Sixteen State Preceptors of Songgwangsa Temple, who received it from Kublai Khan, Emperor Shizu of the Yuan dynasty, while returning from a visit to Yuan undertaken on the orders of King Chungnyeol. The document is now divided into six fragments of varying size. Although the colouring is uneven, it is overall a light yellowish-brown, similar to ochre, and judging from the thickness, colour and handwriting of the paper, it is presumed to have originally been a single document. Although it is not now complete, its content can be divided into three parts: the identity of the document's holder and a guarantee of that status; the naming of those who would guarantee this status and a request for their cooperation; and a section certifying the issuer of the document. The Tibetan-script document of Songgwangsa Temple is regarded as extremely important material for understanding the active exchange of Buddhism between Goryeo and Yuan.
