The Lecture Hall of Sosuseowon Confucian Academy in Yeongju was the place where scholarship was discussed and taught, one of the academy's two main functions. It stands on a high platform of dressed rectangular stones, with foundation stones of shaped natural stone set on top. The building measures four bays across the front and three bays deep, with a hip-and-gable roof and double eaves; it is grand in scale while retaining its aged character, and a veranda about 1 m wide runs around all four sides. The edge of the veranda has raised sills 6.5 cm and 8.5 cm high, and corner posts supporting the hip rafters are set at the four corners of the platform. The front of the Lecture Hall faces east, and steps are set into the platform on the south side so that visitors can enter the hall directly from the academy's entrance. On the north wall of the interior main hall hangs a horizontal plaque reading 'Sosuseowon', written in King Myeongjong's own hand. Of the four front bays, the three on the left form a wooden-floored hall, while the single bay on the right contains two rooms; steps are set into three sides of the platform (front, right and left), and the chimney is formed by a small opening bored beneath the floor. A single upward-curving bracket arm projects from the upper part of each column and is joined to the bracket block atop it, forming a single-bracket-arm (cho-ikgong) structure. The roof frame is of the five-purlin type, with the main beam spanning between the ordinary columns at front and rear; short king-post columns are set on this beam to support the upper beam, above which a scroll-carved king post supports the ridge purlin.
