The Bihaedang Sosang palgyeong sicheop was compiled in 1442, the twenty-fourth year of King Sejong, at the initiative of Prince Anpyeong (1418–1453, pen name Bihaedang). Poems on the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang by Emperor Ningzong of Song China were copied, and paintings of the Eight Views were made and carved onto woodblocks; the Eight Views poems of the Goryeo poets Yi In-ro and Jin Hwa were then added, and poems were gathered from nineteen scholars — including Kim Jong-seo, Seong Sam-mun, Park Paeng-nyeon, Sin Suk-ju, An Ji, Gang Seok-deok, Choe Hang, Nam Su-mun and Sin Seok-jo — to form a scroll of poems. The present album was remounted from that original scroll, from which the paintings of the Eight Views and Emperor Ningzong's poems had by then been detached, into its current album format. The work originally appears to have taken the form of a handscroll containing Emperor Ningzong's Eight Views poems and paintings, the Eight Views poems of the Goryeo poets Yi In-ro and Jin Hwa, poems by contemporary writers of King Sejong's reign, and a preface by Yi Yeong-seo. At present, however, Emperor Ningzong's poems and paintings no longer survive, and, as noted, the work has been remounted as an album of forty-five leaves. The preface, which had originally stood after the monk Man-u's poem, has recently been moved and remounted to follow Weng Zhengchun's colophon. There are twenty-one authors in all (two from Goryeo and nineteen from Joseon), and the writings of the nineteen Joseon authors are judged to be in their own hands. The achievements of the scholars of the Hall of Worthies who were active under King Sejong are recorded in detail in the historical records, and most of the books they compiled still survive. However, between the reigns of King Danjong and King Sejo, Prince Anpyeong, Hwangbo In, Kim Jong-seo and others were killed, and many eminent men, including the Six Martyred Ministers, were sacrificed in the movement to restore King Danjong to the throne; the Hall of Worthies was then abolished, and as a result very few genuine writings by the scholars of that time have come down to us. Amid this loss, the Mongyu dowondo (Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land) and this Bihaedang Sosang palgyeong sicheop are highly valued for allowing the ink writings of nineteen renowned literary scholars of the age to be appreciated together in a single work.
