Celadon Ewer and Saucer with Inlaid Peony and Willow Design
청자 상감모란양류문 주전자 및 승반 · 靑磁 象嵌牡丹楊柳文 注子 및 承盤

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a work in which a voluptuously rounded ewer and a neatly finished saucer come together in beautiful harmony. The body widens into a broad oval as it descends toward the base, increasing its sense of volume; a short, S-shaped spout is attached to one side, and a semicircular handle to the other. The saucer is shaped like a wide bowl, but its rim flares out considerably, and its interior floor is made broad and flat so that the ewer can be set upon it. The foot is relatively high and flares out widely toward the point where it meets the ground. The rhythmic depiction of fully opened flowers and luxuriant willow branches, inlaid in black and white on the body, harmonises beautifully with the piece, and the greenish jade-coloured glaze known as bisaek, applied over the entire surface, has a soft, understated lustre. The voluminous form, the subdued glaze colour, and the distinctive expression and combination of designs all add to the value of this celadon ewer.
