Buncheong Jar with Inlaid Peony Design
분청사기 상감모란문 항아리 · 粉靑沙器 象嵌牡丹文 立壺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Buncheong Jar with Inlaid Peony Design is a work in which a sturdy, powerful form is harmonised with the bold surface-inlay technique known as myeon-sanggam. The lip curves completely outward from the end of the rim, and the short but wide neck flares in a smooth curve that suits the large, rounded body well. The shoulder spreads broadly and rounds outward to give a full, voluminous impression, then narrows gently towards the base before flaring slightly again at the foot, lending the jar both fullness and slenderness at once. Three peony blossoms and their fully opened leaves are carved across the centre of the body and rendered in white inlay that fills almost the entire surface, showing a bold and unrestrained expressive power. The glaze is relatively thin, transparent and pale green, showing patches of yellowish green around the rim and neck. The overall effect, of white peonies in full bloom tinged with a faint green light, is as beautiful as an imagined flower. With its lively peony blossoms and leaves, lotus flowers and scrolling foliage band all in harmony with the jar's tall, slender form, it is a work from the golden age of Goryeo celadon.
