Buncheong Barrel-shaped Vessel with Stamped Dots Design

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Buncheong Barrel-shaped Vessel with Stamped Dots Design has a round, cylindrical body laid on its side; the edges, which were partly shaped by beating to form facets, were then rounded off, and the mouth of the vessel was attached at the centre of the upper surface. The entire surface is stamped, using a seal carved with several small circles to form a string-of-beads pattern, so densely with countless dots that no space is left bare. The glaze is a thin, transparent pale blue-green applied over the whole surface. The overall shape, as if beaten into form like a block of meju, fermented soybean paste, gives an unpretentious yet dignified impression, and the stamped decoration covering the entire surface makes it highly distinctive. Stylistically refined while also possessing an unaffected, rustic charm, it is a highly distinctive example of stamped buncheong ware from the height of its production in the fifteenth century.
