Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a set comprising one buncheong epitaph tablet, rectangular and pillar-shaped with a round hole pierced through it, bearing a date record of the thirteenth year of Jeongtong (1448, the thirtieth year of King Sejong of Joseon), together with six pieces of stamped buncheong ware believed to have been excavated alongside it: one flattened bowl, one large tray, two small jars and two dishes. Ceramic epitaph tablets first appear in the Joseon period, and examples from the early Joseon period are extremely rare. This tablet, one of the older surviving ceramic epitaphs, bears inscriptions across four faces recording the personal details of its subject — a woman of the Yi clan holding the rank of Yeongin — including her husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and maternal grandfather, her one son and two daughters, the year of her death, her lineage and her social status. This makes it a highly important source for understanding the society of the time. It is also of great value for the study of ceramic history, since it bears an absolute date of manufacture (1448, the thirtieth year of King Sejong of Joseon). In addition, the stamped buncheong wares said to have been excavated together with this epitaph tablet make it an important source for the study of buncheong ware of this period.
