In the second intercalary month of 1795 Jeongjo took his mother to Suwon for her sixtieth birthday, staying eight days. These eight panels record the main events: paying respects at the Confucian shrine, the examination results announced, the banquet itself, the feast for the elderly, the night manoeuvres from the western command post, the archery, the procession home, and the crossing of the Han river on a bridge of boats. They were painted by Kim Deuk-sin, Yi In-mun and other court painters attached to the Gyujanggak. Some panels keep to the traditional composition; the procession scene uses the zigzag arrangement associated with Kim Hong-do, and the river crossing does something not seen in court painting before it. The numbers and the order of the column match the written record of the event, which makes this less a painting than a document — and the crowds along the route, individually drawn and often comic, make it a picture of the period as well.
