Folding Screen of Irwol bandodo (The Sun, the Moon, and Sacred Peaches)
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Folding Screen of Irwol bandodo comprises two large court decorative folding screens, each made up of four panels, depicting the sun, moon, mountains, water, rocks and peach trees; it is thought to carry the same symbolic meaning as sipjangsaengdo, paintings of the ten symbols of longevity, with the auspicious associations attached to the peach especially strongly embedded in the work. The painting shows, in extremely vivid colours and fine brushwork, the red sun and white moon symbolising the king and queen, heavenly peaches said to grant long life to anyone who eats even a single one, blue-green rocky mountains, surging bends of water, and rugged rocks. The symmetrical arrangement of the sun, moon, mountains and waves is, in both subject matter and symbolism, similar to the Irwol obongbyeong, the Screen of the Sun, Moon and Five Peaks that was placed behind the royal throne. The work shows outstanding skill in its viewpoint and technique, and excels equally in subject matter, composition and painting method.
