Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Yongbieocheonga (Song of Dragons Flying in Heaven), Volumes 1-2 <Mansong Gwi 369B1> and Volumes 7-8 <Mansong Gwi 369B4>, one book each, held in the Mansong Collection of Korea University Library, are first editions from 1447. They are the same edition as the Yongbieocheonga <Garam Gogwi 811.51-G995y> held by the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University, and as the already-designated treasures Yongbieocheonga Volumes 3-4 (held by the History Museum) and Volumes 8-9-10 (held by Keimyung University). In Volume 1, the first three leaves of the opening preface have been lost, and in Volume 2, leaves 44 to 46 are partly damaged: leaf 45 retains only three lines, with lines four to nine lost. Volumes 7-8 bear a title label on the cover reading "Yongbieocheonga"; although worn with age, they are in relatively good condition. Volume 7 in particular is the only known copy, and Volume 8 is in better condition than the designated Keimyung University copy. The paper and printing are in excellent condition, and the overall contents of each volume survive comparatively well, making them fully worthy of designation as a State-designated Heritage (Treasure). The Yongbieocheonga is the first text published in Hangeul after the creation of the script. Its 125 cantos in Hangeul not only show the earliest form of Hangeul usage, but the Hangeul transcriptions of proper nouns and official titles that appear in the commentary are also valuable for the study of the history of the Korean language. Volumes 1-2 and 7-8 of the Yongbieocheonga, one book each, held in the Mansong Collection of Korea University Library, are first editions of 1447, the twenty-ninth year of King Sejong; given their relatively good state of preservation and the rarity of surviving complete copies, they fully merit designation and preservation as a State-designated Heritage (Treasure).
