Sama bangmok (Roster of Successful Licentiate Examination Candidates)
사마방목 · 司馬榜目

The Sama bangmok of the Sinyu year, the fourteenth year of the Hongzhi era (1501), is the roster of candidates who passed the saengwon and jinsa examinations held in the seventh year of the reign of Yeonsangun (1501). The chief examiners of the First Hall of the jinsa examination were six officials, including Right State Councillor Yu Sun, Second Minister of Taxation Kim Sim, and Senior Section Chief of the Ministry of Personnel Nam Gon; the chief examiners of the Second Hall were six officials, including Inspector-General Seong Hyeon. The top scorer of the saengwon examination was Yi Su-jeong, and the top scorer of the jinsa examination was Kim An-guk. Among the people recorded in this book, the names of Nam Gon, who served as an examiner, and Kim An-ro, one of the five top-ranked candidates in the jinsa examination, are both blotted out with ink, because they were later convicted as criminals after the results of the examination were announced. This book has been handed down in the family of the descendants of Kim Sik (1482-1520, posthumous title Munuigong), who passed the jinsa examination on this occasion; it is a Chojugapinja edition, printed in early Gapin-type metal movable type and issued directly by the Ministry of Rites. It is a valuable source for the study of the state examination system and personal relationships of the early Joseon period.
