Jinil yugo is the collected poetry and prose of Seong Gan (1427–1456), sobriquet Jinilje, who served as Third Censor in the early Joseon dynasty. After his death, his elder brother Seong Im, Minister of Personnel, gathered his writings, and his younger brother Seong Hyeon, who served as Daejehak, the head of the Hongmun'gwan (Office of Special Advisors), edited them; the book was then printed from woodblocks in the 13th year of King Sejo (1467) as the first edition. The collection opens with a preface written by Seo Geo-jeong and a biographical account of the author written by his brother Seong Hyeon. Volumes 1 to 3 contain his poetry, and Volume 4 contains 13 prose pieces, including rhapsodies, prefaces, records, discourses, postscripts, biographies, and petitions. At the end of the book is a postscript written in 1458 by his friend Yi Seung-so. Notably, the collection includes a large number of writings exchanged with prominent contemporaries with whom he associated, such as Gang Hui-maeng, Kim Su-on, Kim Su-nyeong, No Sa-sin, Seo Geo-jeong, Yi Seung-so, Im Won-jun, and Yi Pa, making it an important source for the study of the literature and thought of early Joseon literati. As one of only a few literary collections published in the early Joseon period, it is a valuable resource for the study of early Joseon literature and bibliography.
