Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Mahavaipulya purnabudha Sutra (The Complete Enlightenment Sutra), often abbreviated as the Wongakgyeong, was adopted as a set text in the training of Korean monks and serves as a guide to Buddhist practice. The copy held in the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies is a metal-movable-type edition printed at the Jujaso (Royal Foundry) using the eulyu-type, based on the 1465 vernacular translation produced by the Directorate for the Publication of Buddhist Scriptures, from which only the Korean gugyeol glosses to the sutra text and commentary were edited and typeset; it survives as an incomplete set of a single volume, comprising the preface and Part 1-1 of Volume 1. This edition was cast and published in the eulyu year (1465), to mark the completion of Wongaksa Temple, by order of King Sejo, using type modelled on the calligraphy of Jeong Nan-jong, and is accordingly known as the "eulyu-type edition." Because this type had been cast chiefly for printing Buddhist scriptures such as the Wongakgyeong, strong opposition from Confucian officials of the time prevented its continued use, and it is known to have later been melted down for the casting of the gapjin-type. For this reason, copies handed down from this edition are extremely rare, and it holds important value as material for the study of the Korean language and of bibliography in the Joseon period.
