Elders and Celebration for Granting Titles of Nobility Under King Yeongjo)
영조 기로연·수작연도 병풍 · 英祖 耆老宴·受爵宴圖 屛風

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis screen depicts two major ceremonial scenes. The first, shown on panels 2 to 4, took place on the 18th day of the eighth lunar month of the eulyu year (the 41st year of King Yeongjo, 1765), when the king, accompanied by the Crown Grandson, visited the Girosa (Office of Elder Officials), performed the rite of homage at the Yeongsugak Hall within it, and then, at the neighbouring Giyeonggwan Hall, bestowed royal wine — wine brewed at the court's Wine Office and presented by the king to his officials — upon the elder officials. The second scene, on panels 5 to 7, shows the rite of receiving a rank performed on the 11th day of the tenth lunar month of the same year at Gyeonghyeondang Hall in Gyeonghuigung Palace, to mark King Yeongjo's mangpal, the point at which a person turning 71 is considered to be 'looking toward' the age of eighty. It is very rare for a single screen to combine two scenes in this way; the two are thought to have been brought together to commemorate both the Gi-ro Banquet, at which the elder officials who had an audience with the king at the Girosa — eight men, including Yu Cheok-gi, named in the roster — sat together with him, and the rank-conferral banquet held afterwards. Panel 1 carries a preface by Yi Jeong-bo recording the homage rite at Yeongsugak and the bestowal of wine at Giyeonggwan, and panel 8 gives the roster of attendees. Other court paintings recording the homage rite and wine-bestowal of the eighth month of 1765 survive in the Jangseogak Archives as Chinnim seonondo and Yeongsugaksong, but both are album leaves showing only the wine-bestowal at Giyeonggwan. This work, by contrast, is notable as a large-format screen depicting not only the homage rite and wine-bestowal of the eighth month of 1765 but also the rank-conferral rite of the tenth month of 1765. It is also an important work that, in its pictorial quality and technique, well illustrates the character of eighteenth-century court painting.
