Tomb Keeper’s House at Nyeongneung Royal Tomb, Yeoju
여주 효종 영릉재실 · 驪州 孝宗 寧陵齋室

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYeongneung Royal Tomb is the tomb of King Hyojong (1619–1659, r. 1649–1659), the seventeenth king of Joseon, and his consort Queen Inseon of the Jang clan. The tomb keeper's house is an auxiliary building of the tomb that served ritual functions such as providing rest for the officiating officials, preparing offerings and storing ritual vessels. King Hyojong's tomb was first sited in 1659 to the west of Geonwolleung Royal Tomb in Yangju County, Gyeonggi-do, present-day Donggureung Royal Tombs, Guri, Gyeonggi-do; it was initially named Ikneung but was later renamed Yeongneung, and a tomb keeper's house was built in front of the tomb when it was constructed. Subsequently, in 1673, cracks appeared in the stone furnishings, and the tomb was relocated to its present site, with the tomb keeper's house moved along with it. Although the tomb keeper's houses of most surviving Joseon royal tombs have lost their original form, having been largely destroyed during the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, the tomb keeper's house at Yeongneung retains the basic form of a Joseon royal tomb keeper's house better than any other, and its excellent spatial composition and layout make it a representative example of Joseon-period tomb-keeper's-house architecture, highly valued for its academic and historical significance.
