Celadon Gourd-shaped Ewer
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a gourd-shaped celadon ewer showing the formative characteristics of the Goryeo period (twelfth century). On the gourd-shaped body eight melon-like grooved ridges have been carved; the spout is formed like a rolled tube resembling a broad, round gourd leaf, and the handle is made to look like a twisted gourd vine. The lid, too, is shaped like an upturned small gourd leaf, and the base has no separately carved foot, giving it the appearance of the base of a gourd itself. The body, spout and handle are well balanced with one another, lending the piece a sense of stability and refined elegance. This ewer is one of the typical examples of jade-green (bisaek) celadon of the twelfth century, an exemplary model of celadon form in which every element is ideally harmonised. Its glaze and clay body show a clean, faintly translucent pale green, among the finest examples of glaze and body quality found in celadon of this pale-green type. As a representative form of the twelfth-century Goryeo gourd-shaped ewer, it holds very high historical and artistic value.
