Gilt-bronze Seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam
해남 대흥사 금동관음보살좌상 · 海南 大興寺 金銅觀音菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a bodhisattva image seated in the royal-ease posture, relatively large in scale for a gilt-bronze statue. The detailed treatment and style of the figure overall carry on the characteristics of the Goryeo period well, but features such as the oval, fleshy face, the pronounced nipples, the absence of jewelled ornament across the front of the body, and the stiff rendering of the celestial scarf wound around the body are considered characteristic of the early Joseon period. As a gilt-bronze image of the early Joseon period this bodhisattva is relatively large, and although there is some damage to parts such as the crown, it otherwise preserves its original form well. Bodhisattva images of this size seated in the royal-ease posture are also rare among early Joseon examples, and with its well-balanced proportions and naturally rendered drapery folds, it is a gilt-bronze bodhisattva statue of very fine carving technique.
