Donghwasa Temple was first built in the Silla period and has since been rebuilt eight times; the Daeungjeon Hall, too, has been rebuilt on several occasions. The present hall is thought to have been built between the third year of King Yeongjo (1727) and the eighth year of King Yeongjo (1732), in the late Joseon period. As the central building of the temple, it measures three bays across the front and three bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. The bracket sets supporting the eaves are in the dapo style, a multiple-bracket system with clusters placed both above the columns and between them. The doors are fitted with sosseul flower-lattice windows, carved with multi-coloured petal decoration. The columns, moreover, are unhewn timber used in its natural form, giving the building a sense of stability and natural beauty.
