The original woodblocks for this sutra were carved in May 1474, the fifth year of King Seongjong, at Gyeonseongsa Temple, the family temple of Lady Sin, wife of Prince Gwangpyeong. Printing was funded by the Naesusa, the office managing royal household finances, at the request of Queen Dowager Jeonghui, Queen Dowager Insu, Queen Dowager Ansun and His Majesty the King, in order to pray for the repose of Queen Gonghye, King Seongjong's first consort, who had died in Guhyeonjeon Hall of Changdeokgung Palace in April of that year at the age of nineteen. After three of the original blocks were later lost, the sutra was re-carved and reprinted in 1485, the sixteenth year of King Seongjong. A colophon at the end of the first volume reads, "Supplementary carving made in the fourth month of the twenty-first year of Chenghua [1485], sponsored by the chief patron, the monk Sinhwan," recording both the date of the re-carving and the name of the patron who arranged it. As a royal edition funded by the Naesusa and carved by noted engravers of the period, it is a valuable source for the study of publishing and printing in the early Joseon period, and of the history of Buddhism in relation to the royal family.
