Donamseowon Confucian Academy was founded in 1634, the 12th year of King Injo, as a private educational institution of the Joseon period established to hold memorial rites for revered scholars and to carry on their learning. It enshrines the spirit tablets of Kim Jang-saeng (1548–1631) together with those of Kim Jip, Song Jun-gil and Song Si-yeol, and is one of only 47 seowon academies nationwide that survived Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing such academies. Eungdodang was the lecture hall where students honed their scholarship; it remained on the academy's original site and was moved to its present location in 1971. During the move, an inscription found on a roof tile revealed the building to be older than had been thought. It measures five bays across the front and three bays in depth, with a gable roof whose roofline, seen from the side, resembles the Chinese character for "person" (人). Among the lecture halls of seowon academies from the mid- to late Joseon period, Eungdodang is unusually large in scale, and because it faithfully follows earlier architectural conventions, it is valued as important material for the study of lecture-hall architecture.
