Celadon Dish with Lotus Design in Relief
청자 양각연판문 접시 · 靑磁 陽刻蓮瓣文 楪匙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an elegant dish with an everted rim, a gently curving profile, and a broad, tall foot. On the exterior, a band of lotus-petal design is carved in relief with fine geometric precision, and the entire surface is covered in a clear, lustrous bisaek (jade-green) celadon glaze of pale greenish-blue tone. It is presumed to be a product of the Sadang-ri kiln in Gangjin, made around the 12th century of the Goryeo period. Inside the foot, traces remain at three points where the piece was fired supported on quartz-sand refractory-clay spurs; among surviving celadon wares, this method of firing appears only in pieces whose glaze and body colour are pure, free of crazing and complete. As a dish carved with a crisp, sharply rendered lotus-petal design in relief, its side profile draws an S-curve as the rim flares broadly outward. Given that the design is carved in relief and the condition of the glaze and body is excellent, it is judged to be a piece of the highest quality. Its form, design, clear and transparent celadon glaze, and overall workmanship are all outstanding, and in particular the visual effect produced by the interplay of the relief carving and the varying density of the glaze demonstrates the clear, vivid expressive power of pattern that is a defining formal characteristic of Goryeo celadon, giving the piece high value as evidence of this quality.
