Daeungjeon Hall of Jikjisa Temple, Gimcheon
김천 직지사 대웅전 · 金泉 直指寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Daeungjeon Hall of Jikjisa Temple, Gimcheon stands to the north, reached by a path that curves upward along a valley on the left as it follows the terrain, passing through Iljumun Gate (One Pillar Gate), Geumgangmun Gate (the gate of the Vajra guardians) and Sacheonwangmun Gate (the gate of the Four Heavenly Kings); from Manseru Pavilion onward, however, the buildings leading to Daeungjeon Hall are set out in a single straight line. Seondang meditation halls stand to the left and right of Daeungjeon Hall, and two three-storey pagodas stand in the courtyard in front of it, forming a courtyard-type temple layout with twin pagodas. The framing and the treatment of the structural members of the Daeungjeon Hall of Jikjisa Temple, Gimcheon clearly express the architectural characteristics of the late Joseon period. The hall shows the tendencies of Buddhist halls rebuilt in the years immediately after the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, and retains numerous interior and exterior murals and an altar of beautiful and outstanding craftsmanship, giving it ample historical, artistic and academic value to merit designation and preservation as a treasure.
