This Buddhist sutra is one of the Chojo Tripitaka (the First Tripitaka Koreana), translated at the end of the 10th century by the Indian-born monk-scholar Siho. The title "Seongjise darani" means "the mantra of the greatly virtuous Bodhisattva Jise," and the text teaches that reciting and upholding it can dissolve even grave sins and allow one's wishes to be fulfilled. The engraving of the characters is exquisite, and the colour of the ink and the quality of the paper indicate that it is a well-preserved print made in the 11th century, allowing the original form of the Chojo woodblocks to be examined; it is thus of great historical significance. At the end of the volume are recorded the names of those involved in the retranslation - the verifiers of meaning, the compilers of text, the scribes, the verifiers of the Sanskrit text, the verifiers of the Sanskrit meaning, and the editors of style - making it an important resource for understanding how Buddhist sutras were translated into Chinese and the process of sutra translation at the time.
