An atlas of maps of the counties of Hwanghae-do compiled in the late Joseon period, believed to have been produced by the Bibyeonsa (Border Defence Council) in the mid-18th century. It comprises three volumes and is a hand-drawn, coloured manuscript. The exact date of production is unknown, but since Sogang-jin, a garrison elevated to a naval commander's headquarters (sugun jeoldosa-yeong) in 1719 (the 45th year of King Sukjong), is marked on the map as 'Haengyeong' (mobile headquarters), the atlas is presumed to date from after 1719. The atlas contains maps of 20 counties in Hwanghae-do together with a general map of the province, though the maps of three counties — Munhwa, Sincheon and Anak — are missing. A seal reading 'Bibyeonsa' is stamped on the back of the 'Baecheon jido' map in the third volume, showing that the atlas was kept and used by the Bibyeonsa. Except for the general provincial map, the 20 county maps are drawn on grid paper (bang-an-ji). In terms of notation, roads are distinguished by colour — red, blue and yellow — to indicate major, secondary and minor roads, while beacon-fire routes are marked with thin red lines. The maps depict mountains and rivers, township names, bridges, Confucian academies, storehouses and Buddhist temples, and marginal annotations record basic information such as the number of households, cultivated land area, tax grain and administrative townships and villages.
