Joseon jido (Atlas of Korea)
조선지도 · 朝鮮地圖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA national atlas of counties and districts produced in the late Joseon period, a coloured manuscript. It brings together maps of the counties and districts of seven provinces, excluding Jeolla-do, and is composed of seven volumes in total. Volume 1 contains Hamgyeong-do (23 sheets), volume 2 Pyeongan-do (42 sheets), volume 3 Gangwon-do (27 sheets), volume 4 Hwanghae-do (23 sheets), volume 5 Gyeonggi-do (33 sheets), volume 6 Chungcheong-do (54 sheets), and volume 7 Gyeongsang-do (71 sheets) county and district maps. Each county or district is drawn on a single sheet, and some sheets bear the seal of the Bibyeonsa (Border Defence Council). All the county maps in this atlas are drawn on a grid of 20-ri squares (each side measuring 4.2 cm). Because this grid functions as a scale, the atlas is a rare example in which every county and district in the country is drawn to the same scale. The depiction of the counties and the placement of geographical information are also the most accurate among maps of the traditional period. As a government-produced atlas that clearly demonstrates the development of Korean cartography, it holds great academic and historical value.
