This is a manuscript atlas made in 1678 depicting the horse ranches distributed across the country. During the Joseon period, maps of ranches were first compiled in the early Joseon period; a second compilation was made by Jang Yu in 1635 (the thirteenth year of King Injo); and a third compilation was made in 1658 (the ninth year of King Hyojong). These maps of ranches were made in the form of folding screens, none of which survive today. A fourth compilation was made in 1678 (the fourth year of King Sukjong) by Heo Mok and others, who presented it to the king and also made duplicate copies, one of which was kept at Sabok-si (the Office of the Royal Stables) and another at the Chunchugwan (the Office of State Records). Because of the need for safekeeping, three copies appear to have been made at the same time; one is now held at the National Library of Korea and another at the Pusan National University Library. The atlas of ranches consists of a cover page, 36 pages of text and 6 pages of postscript, 43 pages in all, but the copy held at Pusan National University Library is missing a few leaves. The atlas was compiled so that Sabok-si could use it in establishing important national policy on horse administration (majeong): ranch superintendents (gammokgwan) throughout the country were ordered to report on the actual state of the ranches, in both pictures and geographical information, and this was collated and compiled into the atlas. It is of great historical value and also highly significant in the history of painting.
