This is a map of Hamgyeong-do, Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do produced in the late Joseon period. It is presumed that maps of all eight provinces were originally drawn together, but today only these maps and a map of Gyeongsang-do survive. In content and in the changes of place names over time, this map is almost identical to the county (gun-hyeon) maps drawn on a 20-ri grid scale that Sin Gyeong-jun led the production of in 1770, and its colouring is extremely vivid. Sin Gyeong-jun, acting on the order of King Yeongjo, is recorded as having produced a complete set of Yeoreupdo (county maps), Paldo-do (maps of the eight provinces) and a jeondo (a map of the whole country) in 1770; while many examples in the Yeoreupdo lineage have been found, no example of the Paldo-do or the jeondo had previously come to light. Judging from its content, this map, held by the Hyejeong Museum of Kyung Hee University, is judged to be either an original from the Paldo-do lineage that Sin Gyeong-jun led the production of in 1770, or at the very least a copy made very close to the original. Sin Gyeong-jun's maps occupy a pivotal position in understanding the development of accuracy-focused Joseon cartography: the pursuit of accurate mapmaking sparked by Jeong Sang-gi was carried on by Jeong Cheol-jo, and it was on the basis of these maps that Sin Gyeong-jun's maps were produced. Sin Gyeong-jun's maps, however, are vastly larger than the two earlier map lineages, and they became the decisive impetus for the emergence of Kim Jeong-ho's Cheonggudo. Given this cartographic significance, together with its brilliant, vivid colours, its good state of preservation, and its rarity — no other map of the same lineage having yet been found — this is a map of very high value.
