Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a printing of volumes 1 to 10 of the ten-volume Shurangama Sutra, translated by the Tang-dynasty monk Banramilje and annotated by the Song-dynasty monk Gyehwan, produced in the first half of the fifteenth century. The ten volumes are bound into two books, and the centre fold of each page carries the character "neung" (楞) along with the volume and page numbers. At the front is a two-leaf illustrated frontispiece titled "Byeonsang (Transformation Tableau) of the Great Buddha's Crown Shurangama Sutra," followed, through to the end of volume 10, by finely written gugyeol (grammatical reading marks added to the Chinese text); the woodblock carving is meticulous and the printing is clean. This edition, copied in the calligraphy of Seong Dal-saeng (1376–1444) and lacking a colophon, survives as a complete, undamaged set in good condition. As an edition published in the first half of the fifteenth century, it is highly valuable for research in Korean linguistics and bibliography.
