Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe cover of this album, Calligraphy by Seong Su-chim (成守琛 筆蹟), bears the title 'Cheongsong-seo' (聽松書, 'Writings of Cheongsong'). It was written by the 16th-century scholar Cheongsong Seong Su-chim (1493–1564), who transcribed seven-character poems by the Tang poets Jia Dao, Du Mu and Li Shangyin, and by the Song poet Ouyang Xiu. The paper ground was cut along the lines of text and mounted as an album. It was donated by descendants of Song Myeong-heum (1705–1768) and bears the seal impression 'Cheongeundang', the sobriquet of Song Myeong-heum's father, Song Yo-jwa (1678–1723). Seong Su-chim, together with Yi Hwang, was one of the leading scholar-calligraphers of the 16th century, yet examples of his calligraphy are rare. Only a few pieces of his small-script writing survive today, and his large-script writing is otherwise known only from woodblock prints. A work written in such large characters as this is therefore an exceptionally rare survival, and it also clearly displays his characteristic fondness for pale ink. It is regarded as a work of very high value in the history of Korean calligraphy.
