Calligraphy by King Hyojong
효종어필 칠언시 · 孝宗御筆 七言詩

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCalligraphy by King Hyojong (孝宗御筆 七言詩) is a royal-composed seven-character poem, appended at the end with the note 'Written at the small spring behind my residence', which King Hyojong (1619–1659) wrote on paper in a mixture of semi-cursive and cursive script. It is mounted as a hanging scroll; on the yellow, diamond-patterned silk affixed above the calligraphy is the title 'Authentic royal calligraphy of King Hyojong'. A number of small pieces of King Hyojong's calligraphy are known, including royal letters and other writings collected in the album Hyojong daewang eopil (Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies), and a large woodblock carving of his calligraphy also survives (Treasure, Heritage relating to Princess Myeongan). By comparison, this is the largest known example of his calligraphy in ink, and because it is written confidently in a mixture of semi-cursive and cursive script, it is regarded as a representative masterpiece of King Hyojong's royal calligraphy.
