This seven-character verse is a piece of royal calligraphy that King Sukjong (1661–1720) composed and wrote for the descendants of Yi Gyeong-seok (1595–1671), a distinguished minister of King Injo's reign, after reading Yi's collected writings, the Baekheonjip. It is considered the most reliable example of King Sukjong's handwritten calligraphy known to date. Written on royal letter paper stamped with coloured floral patterns, this work is also recorded in the Sukjong-eoje, the compilation of royal writings by successive kings, which gives it particular value as a source for the study of royal calligraphy. It is kept in a case inscribed in seal script with the words "Sukjong seongje bomuk" ("precious ink of King Sukjong's sacred writing"), and remains in good condition. Together with the treasure "Album of Paintings of the Banquet for the Bestowal of an Armrest and Staff", which depicts the armrest and staff that Yi Gyeong-seok received from King Hyeonjong in November 1668 and the banquet held on that occasion, this work forms a piece of calligraphy of considerable significance.
