Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaeunsa Temple, Seoul, is regarded as a highly accomplished statue representative of the late Goryeo period, combining a dignified and solemn countenance, refined and outstanding carving technique, a grand yet well-balanced sense of form, and taut, tension-filled line work. In particular, together with the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaesimsa Temple, renovated in 1280, this statue preserves the oldest documented renovation record among late Goryeo Buddha statues discovered to date, dated 1274, so it is highly likely that the statue was made no later than the first half of the thirteenth century; given how rare statues made in the first half of the thirteenth century are, this statue is considered to hold even greater value. At over 1m in size, with its original place of enshrinement recorded as Chukbongsa Temple in Asan, a documented latest possible date of 1274, and excellent formal qualities, it is also in a very good state of preservation today.
