Rain Gauge Pedestal of Tongyeong (Navy Headquarters of Three Provinces)
통영 측우대 · 統營 測雨臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe rain gauge pedestal of Tongyeong, now held by the National Science Museum, was installed while the Tongjeyeong Naval Headquarters was stationed in Tongyeong. The characters 測雨臺 ("rain gauge pedestal") are engraved at the centre of the pedestal's front face, together with the inscribed date 辛未 二月 ("second month of the sinmi year"), which is interpreted as indicating that it was made in 1811, the eleventh year of King Sunjo of Joseon, or in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon. It has been judged one of the most valuable scientific artefacts of its kind, of high historical worth, since not only its name but also its date of manufacture is clearly recorded. A square, pillar-shaped pedestal for the rain gauge sits on a round base stone; the base stone is cracked but has retained its original form. At present only five such objects survive as physical artefacts - four rain gauge pedestals and one rain gauge - and this pedestal is one of them. It is, moreover, the only one of the four pedestals to retain its base stone as well.
