The Three-story Stone Pagoda at Beopsusa Temple Site, Seongju stands within the site of Beopsusa Temple, founded during the reign of King Aejang of Silla (800–809). The temple site is laid out in terraces built up with stone retaining walls along a valley of Gayasan Mountain. The precinct measures roughly 150 m from north to south and 150 m from east to west, and is divided into three main terraces. Below the retaining wall presumed to mark the site of the main hall lies the village of Baegundong, and in front of the village the base of a flagpole support is partly embedded among the roots of an old tree. The pagoda stands 5.8 m high, with a three-story body set on a two-tiered base. No part of the finial survives above the base plate (noban), but the pagoda is otherwise in generally good condition. Its reduced scale, the tall lower base, and the incised cusped-arch (ansang) decoration are features typical of the late ninth century, while the five-tiered eave-support blocks beneath the roof stones are characteristic of typical Silla stone pagodas. It is therefore presumed to have been built in the ninth century, around the time the temple was founded.
