Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Daehye Bogakseonsaseo is a compilation of letters written by Daehye Jonggo (大慧宗杲, 1088–1163) of Song China. It gathers letters in which Daehye mainly answered questions on Seon (Zen) Buddhism put to him by scholar-officials; the letters were recorded by his disciple Hyeyeon and later compiled by the lay Buddhist Hwang Mun-chang, known by his Buddhist name Jeongji. The work corresponds to volumes 25 to 30 of the 30-volume Daehye Eorok (Recorded Sayings of Daehye). Of a total of 62 letters, 59 were exchanged with officials and scholars of the time, the remainder being two letters sent to monks and one to a woman. In the title, 'Daehye' is his courtesy name and 'Bogak' his posthumous title; the title is sometimes shortened to 'Daehyeoseojang', 'Seojang', or simply 'Seo', though 'Seojang' is the form most commonly used. This edition was carved in the 13th year of King U of Goryeo (1387), based on the Gyeongsan Myohuiam edition. The cover is loosely bound and bears the title 'Daehye Eorok' written on it in ink. The book opens with the title 'Daehye Bogakseonsaseo', followed on the next line by the names of those involved in its compilation, 'recorded by the disciple Hyeyeon' and 'compiled by the lay Buddhist Hwang Mun-chang, known as Jeongji'; the main text also contains gugyeol glosses. At the end of the volume are Hwang Mun-chang's postscript and a colophon recording that the work was published at Gyeongsan Myohuiam in the eighth month of 1166 (the second year of the Qiandao era); this is followed by a postscript written by Yi Saek in the tenth month of 1387 (the 13th year of King U), together with a votive text for the reigning king and a list of donors. This book was widely used as a textbook in Buddhist seminaries during the Joseon dynasty and, as the only surviving Goryeo-period edition, it is a valuable print that served as the model for later Joseon temple editions.
