Transcription of Avatamsaka Sutra (The Flower Garland Sutra), Zhou Version, in Silver on Oak Paper, Volume 4
상지은니 대방광불화엄경 주본 권4 · 橡紙銀泥 大方廣佛華嚴經 周本 卷四

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis sutra transcription is a single surviving folded volume (cheop), corresponding to Volume 4 of the 80-volume Avatamsaka Sutra, copied in silver ink on oak paper (sangji) in the mid-fourteenth century, during the late Goryeo period. There is no frontispiece painting (byeonsangdo) at the start of the volume, but the cover is decorated with a lotus design, and the text is written out in the standard script (haeseo) with great care; it survives in an almost complete original state and remains in good condition. Only around a dozen sutra transcriptions written in silver ink on oak paper survive in Korea today, and of these only two copies of the Avatamsaka Sutra have been designated as heritage, one kept at Girimsa Temple and the other at the National Museum of Korea.
