Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCalligraphy by Yun Sun: A Hanging Scroll of Old Poems (Gosi Seochuk) was written in the third month of 1737 (the 13th year of King Yeongjo), at Taehwasan Mountain, by Yun Sun (pen name Baekha, 1680–1741), the leading master calligrapher of the first half of the eighteenth century, at the age of 58. It is written in standard, semi-cursive and cursive scripts of various sizes: the small standard script follows the style of Wang Xizhi, the larger standard-script characters follow the style of Dong Qichang, and the semi-cursive and cursive scripts are based on the style of Mi Fu with an admixture of Dong Qichang's manner. The work also carries colophons (jebal) by four notable figures, both contemporaries and later writers, appended before and after Yun Sun's writing; these point out both the strengths and the limitations of Yun Sun's calligraphy, making the scroll notable as a full-fledged example of calligraphic criticism in the late Joseon period. It is also in very good condition, and stands as the finest representative example of Yun Sun's style from his later years.
