Calligraphy by Yu Han-ji is a collection of heptasyllabic, pentasyllabic and tetrasyllabic couplets written in a range of clerical-script styles by Yu Han-ji (1760–1834), pen name Giwon, a master of seal and clerical scripts active in the first half of the nineteenth century. The brushwork echoes the varied manners of the Liqi Stele, Yiying Stele, Shichen Stele, Zhang Qian Stele, Cao Quan Stele and Xia Cheng Stele -- celebrated clerical-script steles of the Eastern Han dynasty -- and this fine work shows that Yu Han-ji had studied broadly across the whole tradition of Han-dynasty clerical script. Seal script written in an archaic manner is included as well. Although undated, the brushwork shows full maturity. In particular, this varied and technically accomplished clerical script, which reveals a thorough command of most Han-dynasty clerical steles including the Liqi Stele, is unquestionably the finest among Yu Han-ji's surviving works.
