Calligraphy by Kim Jeong-hui
김정희 예서대련 호고연경 · 金正喜 隷書對聯 好古硏經

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCalligraphy by Kim Jeong-hui, a clerical-script couplet reading roughly 'fond of antiquity, devoted to the study of the classics', shows first in its content that Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856) was constantly absorbed in the study of epigraphy and the Confucian classics, and its smaller side inscription (hyeopseo) sets out, with notable clarity, the view of clerical script that he pursued. The calligraphy itself has moved beyond outward refinement or technical polish; through its unconventional, far from elegant composition and its dry, roughened strokes, it realises the archaic and unadorned (gojol) quality that Kim Jeong-hui aimed for. Among his many surviving couplets, this is an example in which his particular strengths are especially well displayed, and it remains in excellent condition.
