The old documents of Kim Jong-jik's family are of great importance as they relate to Kim Jong-jik, the leading figure of the Yeongnam School of Confucian scholars, and his descendants. Among them, the royal edicts (gyoji) and appointment certificates (gyocheop) bestowed on Kim Jong-jik, together with the hongpae (red certificates) and baekpae (white certificates) awarded to his descendants upon passing the lower civil service examination (sogwa) and the military examination (mugwa), and various letters of appointment, are extremely valuable sources for studying the state examination system and bureaucratic system of the early and mid-Joseon period. Many bunjaegi — documents recording the division of property among family members — together with deeds of sale for land and slaves and ipan, official certificates verifying such transactions, drawn up when Kim Jong-jik and his descendants received property divided among parents and relatives or purchased land and slaves, have also been passed down. These documents are considered highly useful for studying patterns of property division and the customs of buying and selling in the early and mid-Joseon period. In addition, letters sent to Kim Jong-jik by his mother, Lady Park, his wife, Lady Jo, and his elder brother Jong-yu, as well as a letter sent by Kim Jong-jik's grandson Kim Nyu to a local instructor (hundo) surnamed Jeong, are regarded as important materials for understanding daily life in the early Joseon period.
