Cheonbuljeon Hall of Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam
해남 대흥사 천불전 · 海南 大興寺 千佛殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaeheungsa sits in a broad basin in the Duryunsan range, and rather than lay its halls out on one formal axis it groups them where the ground allows, on either side of the stream that crosses the site. The northern group centres on the main hall; this hall is the centre of the southern one. You reach it through the gateway building and come out in a walled courtyard, the hall on a high stone platform facing west, a lecture hall on one side and a shrine on the other. It is more modest than the main hall across the water, and better for it. Inside are a thousand small stone Buddhas, no two quite alike. They were carved in Gyeongju after a fire in 1811 and shipped around the southern coast; some of the boats were blown to Japan and the figures were returned months later, and the paperwork for that survives. Look for the ones with a small red mark — those are the travellers.
