The Stone Seated Buddha Triad in Bijung-ri, Cheongju was carved from a single stone, combining a mandorla, the Buddha and two attendant bodhisattvas, and a square lion pedestal, worked in a style close to deep relief approaching full round. The bodhisattva that once stood as the left attendant is now missing. The main Buddha is thought to be seated on a square lion pedestal, flanked on either side by two lions sitting imposingly to guard the image, making the mudra of fearlessness and wish-granting. The triad format, in which the Buddha and attendant bodhisattvas share a single mandorla as backdrop, was very popular around the mid-sixth century during the Three Kingdoms period, and the square lion pedestal is likewise a form of pedestal that was fashionable in the early Three Kingdoms period. The right attendant bodhisattva wears a heavy crown ornament, with luxuriant hair falling over the shoulders, and around the neck a necklace with pointed, blade-shaped pendants. The celestial scarf crosses in an X-shape at the thighs, an archaic style; compared with the strongly flaring depictions of the early sixth century, it is much softer, and is thought to reflect the Buddhist sculptural style of around the mid-sixth century.
