Daeungjeon Hall of Bonghwangsa Temple, Andong
안동 봉황사 대웅전 · 安東 鳳凰寺 大雄殿
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Daeungjeon Hall of Bonghwangsa Temple, Andong, was built at the end of the seventeenth century and has been repaired several times since, surviving to the present day as a late Joseon Buddhist hall that retains the dignified formality of a five-bay front facade. Details including the gongpo, the bracket sets supporting the eaves, bear traces of repairs carried out at the end of the nineteenth century, and the fact that the bracket sets on the front, sides and rear all differ from one another is said to reflect the difficult circumstances of the Buddhist community in the Andong region in the late Joseon period. The hall is also highly regarded for its outstanding interior decoration, including the old dancheong, the traditional multicoloured paintwork, on the coffered ceiling and the phoenix painting on the sloped ceiling panel.
