The Hyeolli Five-story Brick-style Stone Pagoda, Yeongyang, is presumed to have been built at the end of the Unified Silla period or the beginning of Goryeo, and shows the style of mojeon seoktap, stone pagodas cut to imitate brick, a form concentrated in the North Gyeongsang region. Brick pagodas and brick-style stone pagodas in this region are characterised by a niche set into only one face of the first storey of the body; this pagoda alone shows the unusual feature of carving scroll patterns on the door jambs on either side of the niche to heighten its artistry. It is also an unusual case in that, although the stones were shaped like bricks, the corner stones at the angled positions were rounded off, showing an evident intention to lend softness to the form of the pagoda.
