Yeonsujeon Hall of Gounsa Temple is a building erected to commemorate a Joseon king's entry into the Giroso, an honorific institution for senior officials, and later kings, who had reached an advanced age, and it is the only such building to survive in its original form. Its dancheong (traditional multicoloured paintwork) and murals are an outstanding example of geumdancheong, a lavish style of dancheong enriched with gold, and they are historically valuable for the wealth of imagery symbolising the imperial household of the Korean Empire. Together with the construction of memorial halls and the changing style of royal tomb stele pavilions carried out in the same period, they provide evidence of how traditional memorial architecture changed under the imperial regulations of the Korean Empire.
