Daeseongjeon Hall of Anseonghyanggyo burned down during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598) and was rebuilt in the mid-seventeenth century. Although it has since been repaired several times, it retains, throughout its form, structure and ornamentation, the early building techniques used at the time of its original construction. The hall shows the typical form of Joseon-period shrine architecture, with an open toekan (a narrow front eave-bay) and a matbae (gable) roof, and its five-bay frontage makes it comparatively large among the Daeseongjeon halls of county- and prefecture-level Confucian schools of the Joseon period. Early building techniques can be seen in particular in the seungdu blocks wrapping the jusimdori (the purlin above the column line) atop the front toebo (eave beam), and in the working methods used for the rafters, buyeon (fascia boards under the eaves) and the joists of the umulmaru (well-frame timber flooring), making the building valuable material for the study of mid-Joseon building technique. The triple-tier roof frame, combining a curved main beam with straight upper and ridge beams, produces a distinctive visual effect that reflects the character of its age, the first half of the seventeenth century, when timber retaining its natural curve was still commonly used.
